So now what do I do? The main WebSpinner screenOnce you've logged into WebSpinner (and selected your desired directory, if necessary), you will see a page that looks very similiar to the page pictured in the screen shot.
This is the main WebSpinner page. This page presents you with the various functions that are available to you with WebSpinner, as well as loads of important information. It is divided into four main parts-- the path listing, the security information, the file box, and the button bar.
The Path ListingThe first piece of information that is displayed on the main page is the path listing. This is the exact location of your directory on the inforM computer. This type of location is called a path. The path listed is not the URL for the page you are working on. However, if you click on the path listing you will be taken to the index.html page for that directory on the web. In order to determine your real URL, simply replace the first part of the path listing, virtual/yourdomain/htdocs/, with http://yourdomain.umd.edu/.
Security InformationThis line tells you which domains have access to to directory you are looking at. You can vary the access to each of your directories using the Security Button. You cannot limit access to a single file, only to entire directories. In order to limit access to a file, it would need to be in it's own directory. Security would need to be established for your domain. Check with your adminsitrator to see if this was set-up.
The File BoxThe file box shows you a list of all the files and subdirectories that are located in your directory. It allows you to select a file or directory, or to scroll up or down the list of files (via the scroll bars on the right side of the box). When viewing the contents of a directory, the first entry will always either be [DIR] ., ./, or [REFRESH] Highlighting this option and clicking the Open Button will refresh the current directory list. When working in a subdirectory, the second entry will always be either [DIR].., ../, or [PARENT] Highlighting this option and clicking the Open Button will move to the parent directory of the current directory and display its contents. If you have turned on the Directory Structure option in the Preferences section, then the Directory Structure will appear to the right of the file box. You may use this structure to get an overview of your directories. In addition, you can quickly navigate through your directories by clicking on any directory name in the structure. For more information about the Directory Structure and other ways to customize your file box see the lesson on the PREFS Button.
The Button BarThe final part of this page is the button bar. The button bar in WebSpinner is actually a series of individual clickable images. Simply use your mouse to point to the desired WebSpinner function and click once (some functions require that you select a file or directory from the file box before clicking the button). For an explaination of each button follow the links on the main tutorial page
